McDonnell was awarded an Academy Award nomination for her role as Stands With A Fist in Dances with Wolves and she is also famous for her performance as the President Laura Roslin in Battlestar Galactica which was the president's wife on Independence Day and for her main role in Donnie Darko as the titular protagonist's mother.
